Crime and Culture: European Edition

Lisa Perks develops an appreciation for art, travel, and crime prevention techniques while studying abroad in turn-of-the-century Europe.

My mom is scared of cities… because cities are where people go to die.

Lisa and 15 roommates lived in this stately home from January to May of 2001. English Professor Nancy Cotton (referred to as “the fabric of our lives”) and her partner, English Professor Bob Shorter, lived in the garden-level apartment. The first floor included the dining room-turned-classroom, a huge kitchen, and a cozy living room. Bedrooms of 2 to 3 students dotted the upstairs, all outfitted with fluffy duvets (another study abroad import into Lisa’s life). The brick house hosted English literature and theatre classes, one memorable viewing of This is Spinal Tap, and dance parties around a bust of Winston Churchill. Check out our party playlist (formerly a ‘mix CD’ below).

When Lisa studied abroad, she ran in Regent’s Park and up Primrose Hill several times a week. Sometimes Gavin Rossdale would be there walking or carrying his elderly dog, Winston. It was often raining.

Primrose Hill, seen in many films, including the Bridget Jones and Paddington series, offers a clear view of the city skyline. The Perks family visited in spring 2022, slogged up the hill, and took in the view.
